Find out more about Boris Johnson providing free school meal vouchers in major U-turn after Marcus Rashford and Labour campaign below:
All pupils qualifying for free school meals in England will be given supermarket food vouchers to cover the six-week summer holiday, in a £120m government U-turn as Boris Johnson made the decision after campaigners including Marcus Rashford and several Tory MPs teamed up with Labour to demand change.
The government will provide £15 a week free school meals vouchers for kids struggling during the summer holidays. The Government do not usually fund the scheme during the holidays - but had done so over the Easter and half-term break during the coronavirus pandemic. The scheme will help 1.3million kids to get help for meals over the holidays.
The announcement from Downing Street came just hours before the prime minister was due to opposing a Labour motion in the House of Commons demanding cash to ensure disadvantaged children have access to food over the summer break. Ministers have said they will continue with plans to put an additional £63million of money into local authorities to help those who can't afford basic essentials.
Manchester United and England striker Rashford responded in a tweet saying:
I don’t even know what to say.

Just look at what we can do when we come together, THIS is England in 2020.
Downing Street said that the scheme - started to ensure that children forced to stay home due to the coronavirus epidemic do not go hungry - will end when schools return in September. Rashford then sent a heart-felt letter, which pretty much had everyone talking (rightly so).
