According to Boris Johnson, he believes that the UK does not need to be put down on another national lockdown, as he is hoping there is a 'significant return to normality' before Christmas. He compared the lockdown to a 'nuclear deterrent'.

With this being said, he also mentioned how the government has given authorities the power to close certain spaces and cancel events that don’t meet guidelines.

This is what he told the Telegraph- ‘It’s not just that we’re getting much better at spotting the disease and isolating it locally, but we understand far more which groups it affects, how it works, how it’s transmitted, so the possibility of different types of segmentation, of enhanced shielding for particular groups, is now there.’

‘We’re genuinely able now to look at what’s happening in much closer to real-time, to isolate outbreaks and to address them on the spot, and to work with local authorities to contain the problem locally and regionally if we have to.’

With the new guidelines, people are able to use public transport for journeys, as well as employers being able to make decisions on whether it is safe for them to bring back staff.

On Friday, the UK's chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance warned that "come winter, the challenges will be very much greater and of course, there is a risk that this could also need national measures as well".

Additionally, Scotland has been the biggest daily rise in newly confirmed coronavirus cases since June.
