US President Donald Trump and Melania have tested positive for coronavirus and are now in quarantine.

Trump announced the news on Twitter only days after the presidential debate with Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

It comes as one of his closest advisers Hope Hicks contracted the virus and travelled with President Donald Trump to the debate, throwing the 2020 election into chaos. Trump’s family who attended the debate were seen not wearing face masks.

Trump, aged 74, falls into a high-risk category as his health records earlier this year categorise him as obese which would cause complications with the virus.

The president’s doctor, Navy Commander Dr Sean Conley said: “The president and first lady are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence".

The virus has infected more than 7.2 million Americans, and has killed 200,000 of them across the nation.

The US president confirmed on Twitter “We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”.
