Today Boris Johnson has warned that the effects of the third wave of coronavirus will “wash up on our shores” from Europe. The PM said the UK should be "under no illusion" we will "feel the effects" of growing cases on the continent.

These comments proceeded with questions about the row over Covid vaccine supplies, after the president of the European Commission warning the EU could "forbid" doses made in the bloc from being exported to the UK.

The Prime Minister went on to issue a warning about what growing infections in Europe could mean for the UK.

Several European neighbours have re-imposed restrictions as coronavirus rates rise. Germany, France and Poland have entered new lockdowns recently, with delays on their respective vaccine rollouts, in comparison to Britain.

Boris Johnson said: “On the continent right now you can see, sadly, there is a third wave underway."

"And people in this country should be under no illusions that previous experience has taught us that when a wave hits our friends, I'm afraid it washes up on our shores as well."

He added: "I expect we will feel those effects in due course. That's why we're getting on with our vaccination programme as fast as we can."

Mr Johnson insisted that – despite the worsening situation across the continent – “we will just bash on the with the roadmap we set out, with the programme we’ve got.

“We’re getting on with our vaccination programme as fast as we can, but a vaccination campaign and developing vaccines, rolling them out – these are international projects and they require international co-operation.”
