The London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The mayor told LBC “we simply can’t afford to have people congregating”.

About 100,000 people usually fill the streets around Victoria Embankment to attend the celebration every year. More than 12,000 fireworks feature in the display, which is set to music and watched by 12 million people on TV.

Mr Khan has announced they are working on something where people can enjoy “in the comfort and safety of their living rooms on TV”, as officials draw up plans for a stay-at-home event instead. If the rule of six remains “there will be nothing happening in Central London” he adds.

The exact details of what will happen on New Year’s Eve has not yet been finalised.
